On transfer deadline day, Nottingham Forest allowed Remo Freuler to join Bologna on a loan deal with an obligation to buy if certain set conditions are met.

The midfielder arrived at the Premier League side from Atalanta in 2022 and made 28 league appearances last season.

Despite being a regular under Steve Cooper, the 31-year-old has told Gazzetta dello Sport that he wasn’t happy at Nottingham Forest towards the end of his debut season.

Bologna technical director Giovanni Sartori knew the Nottingham Forest owned player well from his time at Atalanta. In fact, it was Sartori who brought the Switzerland international to Italy for the first time in 2016, when he signed him for La Dea.

Freuler has revealed it was easy for him to leave the Tricky Trees when Sartori called him in the last window.

“When he called me with the prospect of Bologna it wasn’t difficult to say yes, also because I wasn’t happy anymore at Nottingham Forest,” he said.

“I had played a lot of matches, almost all of them, then in the last five I disappeared from the radarI didn’t understand. I asked but only received non-answers. And I understood. Among other things, my wife wasn’t happy either: Italy was better. And today I am even happier than the day I accepted.”

Freuler was an unused substitute in Nottingham Forest’s last six league games in the 2022/23 season, where they finished four points above the relegation zone.

Cooper had also left him on the bench for the first three games this season, before he arrived at Bologna.

The midfielder has made 10 appearances for the Serie A side.

On Friday, Globo Esporte reported Nottingham Forest’s Gustavo Scarpa had received an offer from Internacional. It was also stated the Brazilian club have been trying to convince him to accept the proposal for the last two weeks.

The 29-year-old joined Nottingham Forest in January and struggled to shine in the second half of last season. Therefore, the Tricky Trees allowed him to join Olympiacos on a loan deal in the last window.

The attacking midfielder hasn’t managed to impress at the Greek club and has failed to score a goal or register an assist from 11 games this season. Internacional are keen on bringing the former Palmeiras man to Brazil and have already taken necessary steps.

That’s according to Rádio Itatiaia, who state the South American side ‘made a proposal’ to Steve Cooper’s side for Scarpa.

The details of their offer isn’t mentioned but the report states the negotiations won’t be complicated since the Premier League side have ‘no interest’ in keeping the player.

It’s said Internacional’s ‘biggest obstacle’ is Scarpa, who continues to maintain the desire to continue in Europe. Their ‘challenge now’ is to convince the Nottingham Forest man, whose salary request is deemed ‘high’ by the Brazilian club.

Rádio Itatiaia state Internacional president Alessandro Barcellos will contest again in the election later this month and that hasn’t stopped him from leading the negotiations for the Nottingham Forest man.

If Internacional were to meet convince Scarpa, they would have an easier route to carry out the operation in January.

On November 8th, Fluminense president Mário Bittencourt confirmed Nottingham Forest’s approach for Nino and also stated there could be progress in the negotiations after the FIFA Club World Cup.

Bittencourt made this claim days after the 26-year-old said he’s aware of the Tricky Trees’ interest.

The Premier League side’s pursuit of the centre-back is again reported by Torcedores, who now claim his ‘future will be at Nottingham Forest’.

During an interview with Charla Podcast, Fluminense director Paulo Angioni has revealed his side have identified Orlando City’s Antônio Carlos to strengthen the defence.

“We will hire on time. We have a defender very advanced in this process, who is Antônio Carlos. And we are waiting for Fernando [Diniz] to comment on other positions. We have to worry about exits,” he said, as quoted by Torcedores.

Nottingham Forest have received encouragement in the pursuit of the Fluminense player after their director confirmed he’s set to leave the club in January.

“We are going to work hard on exits. There won’t be many. I believe the departures will be punctual. Nino and André are players who are about to leave. We have to work in secrecy,” Angioni explained.

The Fluminense director’s comments are also relayed by CNN Brasil, who then share their own short update on Nino. They claim the defender ‘has an agreement’ with Nottingham Forest.

The two outlets haven’t mentioned Fluminense’s request or the fee Steve Cooper’s side are willing to pay.

Nino has scored five goals and registered two assists from 54 games this year.

Real Betis sporting director Ramón Planes has admitted midfielder Guido Rodríguez’s contract situation is ‘favourable’ to his suitors, with Nottingham Forest among them.

The Betis director has been speaking to Radio Sevilla, relayed by Estadio Deportivo, regarding the ongoing contract situation around Rodríguez and teammates Isco and Juan Miranda.

The three players are currently out of contract at the end of the season and yet to sign new deals, which is a problem for Betis as they risk losing them once the January transfer window opens.

All three will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs around Europe and potentially leave on free transfers in the summer.

There’s a distinct possibility that will happen too, with all three enjoying suitors, none more so than Rodríguez.

He’s regularly been linked with a move away from Betis in recent years and in the summer, it was Nottingham Forest who were most keen as they looked to add a central midfielder to Steve Cooper’s squad.

They made several offers for the Argentine and he confirmed he was close to departing, only for him and his family to elect to stay in Seville as his partner wanted to have her baby there.

Whether they decide to stick with that moving forwards remains to be seen and Planes admits his contract situation does favour his suitors, such as Nottingham Forest.

“We are working on those cases and others,” he said.

“There are lighter ones in some and darker ones in others. They are different topics; We are in all three with the idea that they continue at Betis.

“Miranda and Guido’s contractual situation is favourable for other teams, so we understand that they have to value the effort we are making to keep them and our project. We have options for all three to continue next year. With Isco we are closer due to the will of the parties.”

Earlier this month, Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper confirmed Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone groin surgery and will be out of action “for months”.

Awoniyi’s absence is likely to force the Tricky Trees to look for a new striker in January and Udinese’s Keinan Davis could be an option for them.

That’s according to Messaggero Veneto, who state Nottingham Forest ‘like’ the 25-year-old.

The Englishman joined the Serie A side from Watford in the last window and prior to that, the report says Cooper’s side had looked at him.

Davis is yet to make his debut for the Italian club and has been sidelined since September with a calf injury. He was initially expected to return in October but that didn’t happen.

Messaggero Veneto say the player is now training separately, because he ‘seems behind’ in his efforts to regain full fitness. That hasn’t stopped him from being considered by English clubs, where it’s claimed ‘signs are expected for a return’ in the winter market.

Only Nottingham Forest are mentioned in the report as they still like the attacker, after looking at him in the summer.

It’s not yet clear if the Tricky Trees would make an offer and if they table one, Udinese could make it relatively easy for them to secure his services. Should Davis leave, the Serie A side have identified AS Roma’s Andrea Belotti as the candidate to replace him.

The 29-year-old, who joined the Tricky Trees at the start of this year, has been on loan at Olympiacos since the last window. He has clocked in just over 400 minutes from 11 games this season and has been linked with a move away from the Greek club.

Internacional have become the latest club to show interest in the Nottingham Forest man, according to Globo Esporte.

The Brazilian club believe the former Palmeiras man could form a partnership with the likes of Alan Patrick and Charles Aránguiz, if he were to join them. This is why they have now identified the 29-year-old as the main transfer target.

It’s claimed the South American club have been talking to the attacking midfielder for ‘two weeks’, to try to convince him to ‘accept the offer’.

Sources close to the Nottingham Forest owned player have told Globo that his plan is to ‘remain in Europe’, to showcase his qualities, which hasn’t happened just yet.

If Scarpa were to be convinced, the outlet doesn’t specify whether Internacional want him on loan or a permanent transfer. Nottingham Forest’s stance on a potential transfer is also not mentioned.

Nottingham Forest are keen on signing Fenerbahçe’s Ryan Kent in January, according to a report from Turkey.

The winger joined the Yellow Canaries in the last window and has so far struggled to have a prominent role at the Istanbul club. He’s clocked in 559 minutes from 14 games, managing a goal and two assists in the process.

Haber 7 now state Nottingham Forest want to bring the Englishman back to the country in the winter market.

Steve Cooper’s side have taken the step to sign the 27-year-old and it’s claimed they’ve made an ‘official offer’ to the Turkish club.

Forest want to take him on a loan deal and the outlet adds they are not aware whether or not that includes an option/obligation to buy.

It’s said the Premier League side are expecting a response from Fenerbahçe ‘as soon as possible’. As it stands, the latter haven’t yet given a definitive answer but have evaluated the proposal tabled by Nottingham Forest for the player.

Kent, who is a product of Liverpool’s academy, spent the majority of his playing career in the UK. He was at Rangers for four years before joining Fenerbahçe in the summer.

Fulham and Nottingham Forest are both in the background eyeing a deal for Bologna’s Lewis Ferguson, who can be secured for a potential bargain price of €15m.

That’s according to Tuttosport, who cover how the Premier League duo may be competition for Juventus, who are also considering a move for the midfielder.

The newspaper explains that Juventus eyes have been turned to Ferguson as they look to add a midfielder to their squad, and he continues to impress in Serie A, with three goals this season following seven in his first season last year.

His performances have been key to Bologna sitting fifth in the table and just three points from a Champions League place, something which would make it difficult to sell in January.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t interested parties, though, and while Juventus are now in the mix Fulham and Nottingham Forest ‘have liked Ferguson for some time’ while AC Milan are also keeping an eye on him.

Juventus have ‘shown the most decisive signs’ towards him at this point as they have a relationship with his agents, who also represent Federico Gatti.

They’ve been getting him signed to a new deal and in that process tested the waters for Ferguson, before sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli went to scout him in person.

He scored the winning goal in that game and that’s caused the Bianconeri to press, particularly as his asking price of €15m is half of what they would need to spend on other targets.

That’s also a figure Fulham and Nottingham Forest could easily afford as well and they want to start moving themselves if their interest is as firm and longstanding as Tuttosport suggest it is.

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba has told L’Equipe that he enjoyed his time at the City Ground.

The Tricky Trees signed the 29-year-old from Caen in 2019 and he spent three years with them, before returning to his home country, when he joined RC Lens in 2022.

Steve Cooper’s side returned to the Premier League last year, after overcoming Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final. That clash was the Frenchman’s last outing for Nottingham Forest.

On Wednesday, the Ligue 1 side will face Arsenal at the Emirates and the Champions League tie will see the stopper return to England for the first time since leaving Forest.

Ahead of the European tie, L’Equipe had a detailed interview with the player, where they questioned his decision to join Nottingham Forest, who were then in the Championship.

“I had a few requests from Ligue 1 after my season with Caen. But I’m someone who likes to discover new things,” he said.

“There was a lot of reflection with those around me, my agent. And, with my wife, we thought, why not start from scratch? That’s what attracted me. And it was really my wife who made me make this decision.”

During his time at Nottingham Forest, the goalkeeper kept 45 clean sheets and conceded 124 goals and 133 games. He was instrumental in the play-off semi-final against Sheffield United in 2022, where he stopped three penalties in the shootout.

When asked whether that was the ‘biggest emotion’ he experienced in his career, Samba explained: “Unquestionably. When I arrive in England, I tell the guys: we’re going to go up.

“Joe Worrall, the current captain, said to me: ‘Do you know how long it’s been since we went up? We’re cursed’. I replied: you will see, with me, it will be different. I always had this thing in the back of my mind, I wanted to experience something strong. This is the reason why in this match, I transcended myself. I had spoken, I had to take responsibility.”

After helping Cooper’s side achieve promotion, the player left them for Lens in 2022, and this decision left several Nottingham Forest players surprised.

“My teammates told me: ‘You’re crazy, you’re adored in this city, you don’t pay anything anymore if you go to eat somewhere, why would you leave?’ But it was a choice,” he added.

“I left France with a little taste of unfinished business, I wanted to show, I felt ready to return to the country. The relationship with Franck Haise and Florent Ghisolfi (former sporting director) also played a role.”

Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Wilmar Barrios has admitted he turned down the chance to join Nottingham Forest in the summer, preferring to stay in Russia than move to the Premier League.

The Colombian has been speaking to Sport Express about the situation at his current club, when the subject of the transfer window and an offer from Nottingham Forest came up.

A recent claim in England made it clear that Forest had submitted a bid in the summer for him as they looked to reshape their squad for a second year in the Premier League.

The centre of midfield was certainly an area they were looking to strengthen, with Steve Cooper and his side bringing in Ibrahim Sangaré and Nicolás Domínguez on permanent deals as well as signing Chelsea youngster Andrey Santos on loan.

Barrios was seemingly on their agenda at one point as well, though, something he has now confirmed in his latest comments.

It seems; however, he had no interest in making the move to the Premier League, putting Nottingham Forest’s bid at the back of his mind and Zenit at the front of his plans.

“It’s normal that after the transfer window opens, there are a lot of different speculations and rumours. I can say that I immediately gave all the cards to the club,” he said.

“I said that if Zenit receives a favourable offer, he is ready to consider it together with the management. And at some point, I was offered to extend my contract. I didn’t have any questions or problems, so I accepted it instantly.

“Indeed, there were some conversations (with Nottingham Forest), but all this is already a thing of the past. At some point, we sat down to discuss everything with Zenit representatives, and they made me an offer to extend my contract. I happily agreed.”
